As Capetonians, we can collectively attest to the those winter days where the temptation to begin a hibernating challenge with a great book and your favourite beverage has a certain lure.
As a Parent however, it is known that any such figment of the imagination will remain just there, in the imagination. The combination of school holidays, long weekends and bad weather can create a certain frenzy to get the kids out of the house, even if it is just to ensure that it’s still standing by the start of the new school term.
Well I am delighted to say, we’ve been around the block, and have found some absolutely delightful winter activities for kids in Cape Town and ‘must visit destinations’ to ensure good times for the kids and even for you!

1) Little Mermaid Kids Theater – Canal Walk (15th June – 7th July)
This year Canal Walk is hosting Hans Christian Anderson’s theatrical classic “The Little Mermaid”. The actors, stage production and engaging sing-along-songs never fails to impress, making for an unforgettable experience. The cost is competitive at R100 per person with a special for family tickets of 4 or more. Tickets can be bought on Computicket .

2) Bastille Festival – Franschhoek (13th – 14th July)
Walk awhile on the French side – there is something rather spectacular about donning a bureau and feasting on a freshly made crêpe, Oui?
The quaint town of Franschhoek comes alive with food, music, street acts and kiddies delights. The best of the best is walking the Main Street and taking in the sights and sounds. Top Tip: The town hosts a market which is delightful and filled to the brim with deliciousness. In addition, based off of last year, the town market provided more rides and activities for the children. Festival Tickets are available on Webtickets

3) Disney on Ice – Grand West – (10th – 14th July)
After 4 years of raging success, Disney on Ice is back yet again. The combination of beautiful costumes, top class staging and seriously skilled figure skating is gob-smacking. This show never fails to impress making it one of our favorite highlights of the year. In addition the sing-along songs will undeniably have you and your crew belting out the lyrics at the top of your lungs. Buy Tickets

4) City Rock – 9 Milner Street, Paarden Eiland
Last year City Rock moved their premises, the new space is extremely spacious with a designated area just for the kids. In addition, it boasts a great Cafe, free Wi-Fi and even a full gym. While this is a costly activity, it is great exercise for all and well worth the cost. If you find that you and the kiddos love it , you can get monthly passes to enjoy climbing regularly and at a more cost effective rate.
Waivers are a must and slightly time consuming so if you want to save some time fill it out on the website before your visit.
Top Tip: Clip nails before the visit to ensure good grip when climbing.

5) Lion King, The Movie – Nu-Metro & Sterkinekor Cinema’s Cape Town (Opens 19th July)
As the popular villain, Scar, once said “I would jump for joy but, bad back, you know.” This remake of the classic cartoon is filled with villainy, heroism, humor and amazing animation. Enjoying it on the big screen will, without a doubt, have the whole family humming Hakuna Matata on your drive home. Tickets

Foodie heaven, there’s just something for everyone; pizza, an ice cream parlor, chocolate tasting, several restaurants and fantastic views of the Winelands.
